Y I care:
I am raising $2,250 to support FREE childcare for the children of our frontline workers so they can continue to fight against COVID-19. The amount of stress these people are under is astronomical and for them to worry about their children while they work is inconceivable.
I have been working out at the Y for years (well, off and on), but it is only in the past two years that I have come to understand just how much the YMCA of Metro Atlanta means to my hometown of Atlanta.
Two years ago I began working with the Y to design and build the outside learning environment (AKA playground) for the Early Learning Center at the YMCA Headquarters in Vine City. I have been blown away by the dedication of every person I have met and worked with. In every case they have insisted on the best that could be done to create a beautiful, unique, empowering environment for the children in their care. Their dedication has inspired me daily and still does.
It comes as no suprise to me that these people are risking so much to open their doors to deliver childcare for thousands of healthcare workers and emergency responders on the frontlines of COVID-19. Based on demand, they will be able to serve almost 2,000 children daily. This program allows hospitals and emergency services to remain fully staffed in order to protect and care for our community.
The Y can serve 2,000 children a day IF they get the funding. They have already begun this free service hoping that the funds will follow. They feel they have no choice. Here are some important points:
- children served: 2,000 a day
- $225/week per child
- ages served: 12 weeks to 12 years
- service will continue for the duration of the crisis
- meals served to children
- taking every precaution to ensure the health of the children including cutting the normal ration of staff to children in half to 1 staff member for every 8 or 9 children; frequent decontamination during the day; screening children and drop off caregiver for temperature, etc.
This is an unbudgeted expense for the YMCA. Please help make this critical service possible to help keep our City's front line essential services operational.
100% of every dollar donated has a lasting impact on the people of metro Atlanta by ensuring the Y’s doors are open to all – regardless of financial ability.
This is a time when we all must work together. Raising funds for this critical service is a way I can contribute to support the people who are giving so much on our behalf.
Please join me in supporting this vital service. Thank you, Cynthia Gentry
