Hello Everybody! I am Nick Benson and I work at Camp High Harbour
For 160 years, the Y has worked to ensure local kids and teens have the help they need to prepare for kindergarten, stay on-track in school, grow as leaders, and learn how to contribute to a stronger community. Through wellness and hunger relief programs, the Y helps people of all ages stay active and healthy. But, the Y needs your support of the WHY IT MATTERS Annual Giving Campaign to make this possible.
I am a Counselor at camp High Harbour, and it has become way more than just a summer job. It has brought me happiness, while allowing me to serve kids at the same time. It enables me to make one week of a childs life so much fun that they will remember it forever. I was fortunate enough to be able to go to camp when I was younger, where I met so many of my present day friends. I want to be able to bring more kids to camp, giving them the opportunity to make these types of friends and memories.
Camp is the place where I learned how to work while out of my comfort zone. I was able to overcome my fear of heights by jumping off the blob tower and going on the ropes course. I learned how to meet new people, and get close with them in just a week. AS a counsleor, I have taught skills such as archery, and swimming. Nothing I have ever done has made me feel as good as I did, when I personally witnessed the growth of these kids over the course of the week. I saw kids go from never picking up a bow and arrow in their life, to hitting bullseyes and playing games with the bow. I was able to observe kids go from being scared of the water, to passing the swim test with ease. Camp changed me in every way, for the better. I am asking you to help me. Help me, allow children to experience this change that camp makes in every child. Help me bring kids to camp, to find a place where they feel welcomed and loved. Help me try to improve these kids lives in the span of just a week.
