"What is camp?
Many of us are faced with this question from friends and family. They want to know what could be so great about a place that makes you leave all summer, talk about it all year, and miss it for the rest of your life. However, when we encounter this question we all struggle to form an adequate answer. That is because Camp is not a place or a person; it is not the boats or the blob, or even a coke and a candy bar. Camp is a feeling. It's the feeling that you get when your tires hit the gravel and the memories start rolling back, just as the tears rolled down your cheeks as you left the gates just last summer. It's the feeling you get when your stomach drops as a 200 pound counselor sends you soaring off the blob and your dreams of flying become reality for a quick glimpse of time. There are no words to describe what it feels like to worship your Almighty God along side 400 other people, and hear the coliseum roar as your heart pours out for your Creator. When asked this question it would be silly to tell them how people lose their minds over a special that's not even real or an old lady that no ones ever seen. They would think you are insane if you told them you paid to spend three weeks scrubbing toilets and washing dishes, and those weeks are written down in your book as the best three weeks of your life. Words can not possibly grasp the indescribable feeling of finally joining the warriors in khakis that have changed your life within these gates and then having the opportunity to give back to the same place that has given so much to you. For everyday that remains ahead of us staff, we will strut with fire in our calves, hurricanes in our fists, and inhaling a newfound life from each breath, because we have the best jobs in the world and that’s the truth." -McClaine Wellem, Lake Burton Program Director 2018
Hello, and thanks for visiting my page! I hope those words from one of friends gives you a better idea of what camp is.
Camp High Harbour at Lake Burton has made an enormous impact on my life. Year after year, I have grown into the person I am today from the work ethic, perseverance, and unconditional love this camp has embedded into my life. As I begin my third year as a program director, I will be in charge of the Advanced Leadership Cabin.
So much more than a gym and a great place to swim in the lake, the Y develops vital programs and services for all kids to reach their full potential. Being apart of the 7-2-1 Camp High Harbour campaign will work towards a goal of sending 721 kids to camp on scholarship. No child should be kept from this amazing experience. Any donation helps the cause, no matter the size. As someone who was fortunate enough to have first hand experience, camp gives confidence and freedom to kids, molds and forms teens into leaders, and leaves a positive impression on anyone who has spent time inside the gates. Please consider helping the Lake Burton Staff of 2020 raise the money to send more kids to camp!
