Hi, I'm Jack Bahr! I am a junior at Dunwoody High School where I am a member of the lacrosse team, Young Life, Habitat for Humanity, and Students for Soldiers. I am also a counselor at YMCA Camp High Harbour at Lake Burton. For the past six summers, I have had the privilege to attend this wonderful place.
Each summer I have the greatest experiences that continue to add value to my life away from camp. After my first summer, I was hooked on Camp High Harbour and all of the amazing friends, counselors, activities and lifelong memories that i earned. One memory I will never forget took place during my L.I.T. (Leader in Training) year, which you complete the summer before your freshman year in high school. The L.I.T. program is a three week leadership program where you spend each week with different age groups of campers. My first week I was in Cabin 7 with seven year old boys. The second week I was in the leadership cabin with other LITS where we helped in the kitchen and focused on becoming leaders. The third week I was in Cabin 11 with 11 year old boys.
It was during my second week as a L.I.T. that i realized how truly special High Harbour is. It was a Friday and every Friday night at camp is the closing night program often the final night for the campers. So on Fridays everyone is super excited and ready to go to the coliseum after dinner. The minute I arrived in the colliseum everyone was cheering, screaming, dancing and going wild in order to win the spirit stick. As the night began to slow down Ken, the Camp Director, began his devotion. The fire lit up and "Pass it on" began to play. Then finally everyone lit their candle, and as I looked around the coliseum, I immediately realized that this place is a safe and beautiful home and realized how much it means to these kids, myself, and the other counselors. That moment when I was looking around, I saw my fellow L.I.T. couselors, the staff, and these amazing campers who all are all loved so immensely and it truly was the best feeling in the world! This camp means everything to me and will be a part of my life forever.
Every summer after camp I have learned more about myself, learned how to work harder and put as much effort into everything all the time. While learning all those things I also got to become closer to God and learned how to be a better version of myself. Going to Camp High Harbour at Lake Burton truly is a gift that keeps on giving.
