Y Covid 19 Response
Thank you for getting this far!
All new donations will go to the Covid Response programs described in the email. Thank you for your time and compassion.
First, thank you for getting this far and taking time to hear why I love and support the YMCA. I joined the J.M. Tull - Gwinnett Family YMCA board on behalf of Georgia Power in 2011. It didn't take long before I developed a personal passion for the Y, its members and the staff. After retiring in 2018, I was asked to stay on the board and continue to serve this great organization.
Here’s a quick rundown on the “why” I am so passionate.
- Adapted Sports or competitive and recreational sports for people with disabilities. One of our members shared with our board the impact that adapted swimming made on her child with autism that cannot speak or walk. Our exceptional aquatics staff helped her son become comfortable in the water. His mother said being in the pool is the only time he is relaxed and has a smile on his face. Come to a wheelchair basketball game at the Y and I guarantee you will want to stand up and cheer? It's awesome. You don't get that at Lifetime Fitness. Those special chairs (and the coaching and court time) costs money. It doesn't come from the YMCA membership dues, it comes from The Why It Matters Annual Fund campaign. It comes from you.
- After School - Tull Y Y After-School program for students that live right in our neighborhood. Every school day, 5 days a week, kids get tutored, finish their homework, participate in art classes, swim lessons, play in the gym or outside and then go home as their parents are getting home from work. If not for the YMCA's after-school program, they wouldn't have the opportunities our kids have. Your donation will make a profound difference in their lives.
- Team sports So many of life's great lessons are learned playing team sports. There are the obvious ones: sportsmanship, conditioning, motor skills; however, those are secondary to the really important ones like being part of something bigger than yourself - a team. At the Y, one out of every 4 kids is on scholarship . . . but you'll never know which ones . . . and that's how it should be. That's what your donation does.
- Specialty Adult programs - Tull has developed programs in response to community needs. I have had the pleasure of getting to know several members of the Parkinon's Movement class. One gentleman was bent at the waist. After several months in the class he was standing straight and talked to our board about the difference this class has made in his life. Our partnership with Gwinnett Medical/Winship trains Y staff to work with cancer survivors and offers classes tailored to their needs. As a senior on the sunset side of 60, I may be the beneficiary of programs like these.
Well, that’s it even though I could add many more reasons. Help make a real difference. Click the DONATE NOW button to the right top of this page. It will be put to great use.
Thank you for listening to my Y story.
