Family and Friends,
So much has changed in our world in such a short period of time due to the coronavirus outbreak, and the Y has been working around the clock to adapt and serve those who need us most. With each passing day, it becomes more and more clear how critical the programs we’re providing are, and how much the Y is needed during this time. We can't do it alone; it takes all of us to navigate through this period of uncertainty. Now more than ever, your partnership, support, and guidance are invaluable to the YMCA.
We closed the Arthur Blank YMCA branch for normal operations and, by necessity, were forced to adjust our staff structure to meet the distinct needs of our current COVID-19 response programming. These were extremely difficult decisions, ones that only a few weeks ago we could never have imagined needing to make. Our shared goal now: reopen our doors to our wider member community and restart regular services, so we can invite our valued team members back once this crisis is over.
In the meantime, our service will continue. Our current pillar programs provide: childcare for essential COVID-19 response workers; food security and hunger relief; and outreach to members who are seniors. Additionally, we’re enhancing our online and virtual offerings for members and non-members alike. Below is a overview of the work we are doing to serve the community during the COVID-19 crisis and information on how we are engaging and connecting with our members. You can also learn more on the YMCA of Metro Atlanta website.
Childcare for First Responders:
We’ve activated our YMCA branch locations to deliver childcare for thousands of healthcare workers and emergency responders on the frontlines of COVID-19. We have served almost 800 children in the last three weeks, allowing their parents to work to protect and care for our community.
Food Insecurity Relief:
We are distributing meals for early learners, families and seniors at YMCA sites, expanding our food pantries and partnering to provide additional food distribution programs. Since March 16, we’ve distributed nearly 40,000 meals and this number grows daily.
Operation REACH (Reach Out, Encourage, Activate, Connect, Honor) ensures that we connect with our senior members and other vulnerable groups during this difficult time to offer resources, support, and connection.
