The YMCA and my work inspires me every single day! I love the YMCA and have for over 40 years. My YMCA journey started in 1977 when I played Girls Only basketball for the YMCA of Greater Dayton. I had no idea that the Y was being socially responsible by offering Girls Only sports in the 70's and by standing up for the right for girls to play 5v5. But, because I was given access to play "Girls Only"...I got the ball. I loved it! I kept playing. Sports defined who I became as an adult.
Today, our kids at the Y don't know we are working to be socially responsible or pushing the bar for equity. They are here in our YMCA learning to code in our STEAM Lab and learning to swim in our pool. While they are simply playing; we are fighting for their future!
Each day, Monday - Friday, during the school-year, the Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA picks up our kids from 3 local Title 1 schools, and we bring them to the YMCA. During their time with us, our kids are fed dinner, complete their homework, have it checked and participate in a myriad of "Enrichment" activities.
Some of those activities include:
• STEM/STEAM with a heavy focus on Robotics and Coding as well as the Arts (in the Gas South STEAM Lab,)
• Youth Fit for Life (which focuses on healthy living and self-management)
• Sports (Tennis, Swimming Lessons, Basketball, Golf, etc.)
• Character Based activities and Gardening (in the Gas South Garden.)
One of the signature items of our program is that our kids load the buses back up at 5:45 PM and are delivered right to their homes and signed back to a parent or guardian. Most of our families don't have access to personal transportation. Our desire is to be an extension of a child's family. We care deeply about our Enrichment kids and families and will continue to do everything we can to ensure they have the same opportunities our own children have.
It is my honor and pleasure to fundraise for this amazing, 175 year old organization and for this program! 100% of every dollar donated is given right to the kids at the Carl Sanders YMCA.
Please consider joining me in support of this great YMCA by making a donation today. Your gift of any size will truly make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need the Y most.
Thank you; I am so grateful for your gift, your thoughts and/or your prayers to help us continue doing this great work!

P.S. (We are working with a PhD researcher to measure the impact of this program on academic achievement and using 6 Sigma principles to make it completely repeatable and reproducible. Our desire is for YMCAs to be able to run this program anywhere in the country where kids are living in systemic poverty.)
