Hi! My name is Lourdes Gonzalez, but everyone calls me Lulu. I am fifteen years old and a sophomore in high school. My Y-story began back when I was 6 years old in second grade. My mom had put me in rec-soccer at the McCleskey Ymca along with my older sister. I had no idea what I was doing, and I was not very good at it, But I remembered all the games i had watched with my dad and just tried to copy the professionals and I began to love it. I also continued to fall in love with the game of soccer and I continue to play with the Y MAYS Striker Premier Soccer Team. My mother then put me in swimming lessons, and I cannot lie, I definitely did not enjoy the thought of drowning, but my teacher taught me well and I love swimming now. A few years later my mom brought my sister and I to go to something called Leaders Club at the Y. Leaders club has changed the way I go through life. It has taught me essential skills and techniques I need in order to look at challenges from a different perspective. I am now more confident and able to understand, compromise and give my input to any type of situation. I have gone twice to a week-long leaders' retreat called Blue Ridge Leaders School. As you my assume, there we learned many valuable ways to grow as a leader and grow the leaders around you. I've been in Leaders club for four years now and I very much enjoy it. Leaders has opened so many doors for me. I have met so many amazing people and have been able to have amazing volunteering opportunities. Leaders club has changed my life for the better.
I am so grateful to be a member of one of the biggest non-profits in the nation. The goal of the YMCA is to strengthen communities by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and each other through programs that build spirit, mind, and body. I have now been given on of the best opportunities I have had to be able to share my leadership values, alongside some of my fellow leaders, in the Republic of Georgia in the summer of 2020. At Camp Orange we will have been given the opportunity to assits a summer camp. We have the chance to work hand and hand with the kids, teens, and the community. We are aiming to share our leadership as well as take home everything the leaders at Camp Orange will teach us. My goal is to be able to share everything I have learned and continue to learn and grow as a leader and as a community, inside and outside the Y.
Please help me reach my goal of $3,000 to get to Republic of Georgia by May 1st, 2020. Any gift will truly make a difference in my journey. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about me.
