Hi, I am Lori Proudfoot. I have worked for the Cherokee Outdoor YMCA as the Barn Coordinator for a little over 7 years. I truly believe in the powerful impact and the cause of the Y. One summer we had a young man in camp that was very quiet, shy, and timid around the horses. He tried every day to push himself past his comfort zone to learn the basic skills of horsemanship. At the end of the week at our Friday Horseshow, it was agreed that this young man had earned the Golden Horseshoe Award. This award is given to the camper who has shown outstanding effort and perseverence during the week. When the award was presented to him, he broke into tears. As we stood there confused by the reacton of the child, his guardian approached us and explained his backstory. The child had been removed from his home a few weeks earlier due to abandonment, his whole world had been turned upside down. For just one week, 2 hours a day, this child was able to be himself and feel a sense of normalcy. The Golden Horseshoe Award changed his future outlook completely. Every summer in our program we have the privlilege to service anywhere up to 90 children a week who are able to come to camp because of donations from Y Champions like you. We do not always get to hear first hand about the impact we make, but when we do it makes a lasting impression!
Each day, the Cherokee County YMCA's work to ensure our community has the support it needs to be the BEST. I’m proud to be a Y Champion and to help give ALL kids, teens, and families’ access and opportunity to be a part of the Y – regardless of ability to pay. We love Cherokee County and want to continue to do our part to strengthening our communities through our programs! I am asking you to join me in my efforts to give ALL people in our community a chance to r each their full potential at the Y.
The Y has worked to ensure local kids and teens have the help they need to prepare for kindergarten, stay on-track in school, grow as leaders, and learn how to contribute to a stronger community. The Cherokee County YMCA's have made sure 3,600 kids had a safe, active, and fun summer Day Camp. Over 200 children in foster care received free access to our Y programs and membership. Over 250 kids learned life-saving water safety skills in swim lessons. We served over 1,000 seniors and had programs and activities that help them gain a sense of community and kept them active through Y programs. Over 3,000 kids received healthy lunches during the summer and winter breaks at the Y. But, the Y needs your support of the WHY IT MATTERS Annual Giving Campaign to make this possible.
100% of every dollar donated has a lasting impact on the people of Cherokee County by ensuring the Y’s doors are open to ALL – regardless of financial ability.
Please join me and support the Y by making a donation today. Your gift will truly make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need the Y most in Cherokee County.
